Now to be completely honest, I wasn't too thrilled with series 8. It wasn't Peter, I love him, and it wasn't Clara, although I'm not a fan of her at all. I just didn't have that usual feeling I get when a new series kicks off. The stories didn't grab me and I even stopped watching live on Saturdays. I was watching more out of obligation than that "I can't miss the next episode" thrill that I was used to. That being said, last week's episode, Dark Water, caught me by surprise. I didn't watch it until last night and although the big spoiler was ruined for me, (thanks Twitter) I thoroughly enjoyed the episode. I was a big fan of John Simms portrayal of The Master, however I am completely captivated my Michelle Gomez. The playful banter, the wit, all of it is just perfect, and her line "I just want my friend back" killed me. I was sad to see Danny Pink go. It was good to see that contrast of someone who doesn't think that The Doctor is all that and sees right through him. Although I'm not a fan of Clara on her own, I thought her and Danny made a good team and I honestly didn't see that coming. The ending of the final episode was heartbreaking as well, as we saw The Doctor and Clara parting ways and The Doctor having tears in his eyes as he hugged her goodbye saying "Never trust a hug. It's just a way to hide your face." I may not be a fan of Clara, but there's no denying the impact that she has on The Doctor and something tells me that although they may be parting ways, I'm sure it won't be for long.
