The Wolf of Wall Street is a wholesome, feel good romp into the world of the stock market. Leon- you know what, I can't even type that with a straight face. This movie opens with a rousing game of "dwarf tossing" and goes downhill (or uphill, depending on who you ask) from there. If you're looking for Gordon Gekko, you've DEFINITELY come to the wrong place. Leo plays Jordon Belfort, a young stock broker, new to Wall Street. He starts off on the phones, eventually becoming a top seller, until the market crashed in the 80s. He's out of work until he finds a job in the newspaper and is introduced to the world of the "penny stock" from there we see the birth of his company, "Stratton Oakmont." We see him spiral out of control thanks to cocaine, quaaludes, and alcohol and although some of those scenes are funny, it's still a little sad to watch a man's life disintegrate before your eyes. Jonah Hill plays Donnie Azoff, Jordon's best friend and business partner, and he does a very good job. The movie is long, coming in at a full 3 hours, and around hour 2, you really start to feel it. I wouldn't bring my kids to the movie, although several people at the 6pm Sunday showing that I saw, did. The kid behind me even said to his mom, "I don't think this is appropriate for me to be watching." And with a record setting 506 uses of the "f-word," numerous scenes filled with sex and drug use, and a scene including eating a live goldfish, he was absolutely correct. Am I surprised? No, this is the man that brought us Goodfellas, Casino, and The Departed. To complain about cursing, drugs and sex would be like going to see a Tarantino movie and complaining about too much violence. All in all, it was a good movie. I enjoyed myself although it was a bit long for my taste. 7.5/10
Great Review! Man 3 hours? That's a bit excessive. 3 hours should only be for elaborate EPIC movies like LOTR, STAR WARS or a movie with an extremely elaborate story that's really interesting the whole way. I'm a fan of Scorsese's work, but I doubt this movie falls under the EPIC category, therefore I doubt the 3 hours were actually necessary.
